Great news: Humpback whales have officially made their first appearance in Hawaiian waters this season. Officials with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) have confirmed the sighting of the season’s first humpback whale off the island of Niihau earlier this month! A second humpback was subsequently sighted just a few days later off the coast of Kauai.
While the “official” start of humpback whale season is traditionally pegged to be in November (and lasting through May of the following year,) researchers and whale watchers alike have been seeing a trend towards earlier migration sightings in our warm Pacific waters throughout the last 10-20 years. This is of course fantastic news for those of us living and vacationing on Maui during this period, as watching these majestic mammals play in our waters, whether while on a whale watching tour or from the lanai of your Maui vacation rental, is an enjoyable passtime that never gets old!
