What is the first thing you think of when you get off the plane on Maui? Food? Shopping? Beach? Getting to your Hawaii oceanfront vacation rental? Highly-likely all thee above. But first things first, you are probably heading straight to a car rental location so you can get to all these lovely places and get your Hawaii vacation getaway rolling. Lucky for you, there is a brand new car rental location conveniently located at the Kahului Airport that is fun, fast and convenient.
As of May 15th, there will be a new electric train from the Kahului Airport that will take you on a ride lasting less than 5 minutes to a brand new Consolidated Rental Car facility. The new electric trains are part of a $340 million project to relocate car rental services to a single property location on Maui.
The tram cars, designed to look like the plantation-style trains of old Hawaii, are located across from baggage claim, and come with a control room for surveillance so you’ll always be safe. Each car can hold up to 30 passengers at a time and move 900 people an hour. The electric train is part of the larger transformation that features the new car rental facility itself–a three level structure with an additional basement level. How exciting!
The Consolidated Rental Car facility consists of 1.2 million square feet of space and sits on a 19 acre parcel. The building itself includes around 4,436 parking stalls, 3,743 for car rentals and 693 stalls on the upper level for airport staff and employee parking. There’s also 72 fuel pumps, 11 service bays and 12 car wash racks.
According to a recent article about the new facility, the facility was completely funded by the Customer Facility Charge (CFC), that is a daily charge issued to those renting a car in Hawaii. There are about 2,000 vehicles rented on Maui each day that helped pay for the enhancements.
We hope you take advantage of this new addition to our lovely island. Also, if you’re still looking for activities on Maui or for a great place to stay, please take some time to review our website.
