Fourth Fridays in Kihei Town is a cultural gathering you won’t want to miss. Each Friday in Maui county is dedicated to a specific town. First Fridays happen in Wailuku, second Fridays in Lahaina, third Fridays in Makawao and fifth Fridays on neighboring island Lanai.
The concept of town based Friday celebrations was brought about by the Maui County Office of Economic Development to encourage everyone to enjoy the unique historical aspects of each town and to support businesses in each community. Kihei town is known as beach territory, more specifically 6-miles of sandy white beaches. It is no wonder back in the day Hawaiian royalty chose Kihei as a place to sojourn.
At Fourth Fridays, you can do the same. Here locals and visitors mix enjoying local food, drinks, art, performances and lots of laughs. In the true spirit of Hawaiian style, the food is often a fulfilling mix of Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Filipino, Thai and of course, Hawaiian. A real meal isn’t complete without dessert. Walking along the street, visitors can expect to find such ono (delicious) foods as mochi, kettle popcorn and shave ice.
The Friday events are a perfect place for families. There are often many places for children to enjoy free arts and crafts and performances. Sometimes there are even magicians and face painting! Adults can also access a twenty-one and over area. A specific section is quartered off where alcoholic beverages and live music are enjoyed.
Parking for Fourth Fridays in Kihei is available at Azeka Shopping Center, the Kihei Plaza and at St. Theresa’s Church. The events start at 6pm and finish at 9pm. Entry is free. To stay updated on upcoming Friday events, check out the Maui Fridays’ Twitter and Facebook pages.
