Now that 2013 has been properly ushered in, why not go back in time for a bit of educational fun while on your vacation in Maui? If this sounds like something you would be interested in, consider taking a trip from your Wailea condo rental to the west coast of Maui and visit the storied Baldwin Home at the corner of Dickenson and Front Street in Lahaina.
Built in stages between 1834 through 1849, this historical building in the heart of Hawaii’s former capital began life as the home of the much revered Reverend Dwight Baldwin. A Harvard trained medical professional with an additional background in theological studies, Reverend Baldwin arrived in Hawaii with an immensely valuable skill set and educational background. These qualities helped Baldwin serve the people of Hawaii in various ways throughout the years; from educating citizens in both English and Hawaiian, to training students in mechanics and agriculture, as well as helping to establish early laws and government in the islands. Of course, the Reverend continued to aid those in need of medical attention throughout the years; of particular mention is his service to the people of Maui, Lanai, and Molokai during a deadly smallpox epidemic in the mid 1850’s.
A person whom contributed a very full life of service ot the community of which he belonged, Reverend Baldwin made a huge positive impact on the islands; a fact reflected by his immaculately restored home in Lahaina. Filled with artifacts and photographs from his time here, original furniture, literature and a number of important historical displays, the Baldwin Home is a truly special place to experience when on Maui. Making the experience even more enlightening are the candlelight tours of the home held every Friday evening from 6:00pm until 8:30pm by the experts of the Lahaina Restoration Foundation.
