Kihei vacation rentals can be divided into North and South as the characteristics of either end are distinct from each other. North Kihei condos for rent start south of Maalaea at Haycraft Park all the way down the coast where beaches begin to widen and the sand whitens. This is the part of Kihei closest to the Kealia Pond National Wildlife Refuge. North Kihei is also home to the Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary.
Sugar Beach, the longest beach in Maui, is the centerpiece of North Kihei, beach-wise. It’s where most of the town’s oceanfront vacation rental condominiums are located. If you stay in one of the resorts here, you may even stroll the 2.5-mile beach to get to Maalaea. Unlike South Kihei vacation condos, however, snorkeling here may require you to venture farther out to offshore reefs.
The surfer magnet Cove Beach Park roughly marks the beginning of South Kihei, which extends all the way to Kamaole III, the last of three Kamaole beaches that marks the beach boundary between Kihei and Wailea hotel resorts and condos, the next coastal town. Unlike the beaches in the north, the beaches in South Kihei are wider and more suitable for swimming, standup paddleboarding, snorkeling, and other activities that don’t require stiff winds (like kitesurfing) as the trade winds take a bit longer to hit areas farther south.
With desirable beaches come the corresponding crowds. And with crowds come services to cater to every visitor’s needs. So if you’re looking to be near the beach and tourist facilities and don’t mind plenty of company, South Kihei would be a better fit.
